Winter break is a tradition that should give students a break. Although CMS and several other schools only give students approximately eight days off, depending on where Christmas falls, and many people believe it should be longer.

Many people say that kids should have longer winter breaks each year. Every state is different, but in our school, CMS, we only get eight days each year, while places like Florida, California, and even the average PA school gets two weeks!

One person we interviewed agreed: “Yes, I think we should have a longer break, because we don't have enough time to spend with family and friends, and we also don't have enough time to play in the snow, along with other things like that.  Maybe a half day or full day off on the 23rd,and then maybe one or two more days after New Years."

Many people agree with this statement. Some don't.

Some argue that winter break is long enough, and we definitely don’t need any more time. This makes sense because some people actually like school, and don’t want to miss any more time.  Other than that though, if the school gives us too many days off, we have more days leading into winter break. If we have more than one week of winter break, then all of that time will be added to summer break.

Some parents also just want their kids to be at school. Another reason is that if we take too long on a break, people might forget parts of some things that they’re learning, and that would lead into going over it for longer, which gives teachers less time to teach more things. But, we're pretty sure teachers want a longer break, too.

Here's what we think.

We think that we should have a longer winter break because we only have eight days and other schools, including ones in our state, have longer.

While we might have some school time added to summer break, it’s probably worth it because winter break is the main time that kids get to see long distance family or go away somewhere amazing, considering most kids go to camp during the summer, and it's a good reset for the middle (ish) of the year!
