Plymouth Whitemarsh High School seniors Fiona Gooneratne, Alex Halbert, and Nathaniel Schindler have achieved Commended status in the National Merit Scholarship program.
These students are among the top scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT and are recognized for their outstanding academic promise. According to the College Board, Commended students are named based on a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year.
In addition to being academically talented, Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Commended students are also involved and preparing themselves for post-secondary education. Read on for more details:
Fiona Gooneratne plays varsity-level soccer, basketball and lacrosse and serves as the Class of 2022 Treasurer. Inspired by her father’s actuarial science profession and the computer science classes she’s taken at the high school, Fiona said she plans to attend the Pennsylvania State University to study actuarial science or computer science.
Alex Halbert helped start the Sports Analytics Club and now serves as its President. Alex is also Vice President of the Math Club, serves as a member of the Technology Student Association and the Principal’s Leadership Council, and plays tennis. He plans to go to college to study mechanical engineering or industrial engineering.
Nathaniel Schindler is President of DECA, Co-President of the Mock Trial Club, and President of the Colonial Players. He will be performing in this year’s fall and spring productions and intends to join an international DECA competition. He plans to study marketing and possibly double major in marketing and business administration.
