The Plymouth Whitemarsh High School varsity baseball team, Commended Students/Semi-Finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and a student who received the International Baccalaureate Mid-Atlantic Student Excellence Award were all recognized at the Oct. 21 School Board meeting.
Coach Chris Manero kicked off the evening by recognizing members of the 2020-21 baseball team, which won the Suburban One League Liberty Division Championship in spring of 2021. He noted that when the team played its first game on March 27, 2021, only three students had previously been on the team and that they hadn't played a "real" game in almost two years due to the pandemic.
"I didn't know what to expect, but the team showed that it would demand people's attention," he said.
The team clinched its second championship in 2021. They ended their season as the #2 ranked 6A team in District I of the PIAA. Team members included: Joe Capriotti, Luke Caucci, Ryan Coscia, Dom DiCiurcio, Luke Gartland, Tyler Gartland, Lucas Gilbert, Jack Hildebrand, Jesse Jaconski, Joe Jaconski, Matt Krawitz, Michael Miller, Chase Olszyk, Eddie Owens, Ben Picker, Joe Rauscher, Joe Redmond, Jack Sfida, Ray Tomassetti, Anthony Viola, Alex Wilkie-Viscio, and Tom Yanoshik. Bat boys Carson Wooldridge and Connor Logan were also recognized.
The School Board also celebrated the accomplishments of students who achieved Commended and Semi-Finalist status in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These students were among the nation's top scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT. Semi-Finalists will have the opportunity to continue on in the process to become considered Finalists. Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Principal Dr. Jason Bacani introduced the students and commended them for their outstanding academic achievements. The students include:
Nathaniel Schindler was also honored for being selected to receive the International Baccalaureate (IB) Mid-Atlantic Student Excellence Award. Becky Duffy, Coordinator of the IB Programme, introduced Nathaniel and explained that the IB Mid-Atlantic Association awards one student across five states with a Student Excellence Award each year.
"This award recognizes a student who embodies the ideals of the IB Mission and Learner Profile and who displays a commitment to service in their school and community," said Ms. Duffy. "In May of 2021, the committee chose Nate to win this award despite it being our very first year in the programme and in the organization. And there is no doubt that he is extremely deserving of it."
