The undefeated 2021-2022 Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Girls Basketball Team made history on March 26, bringing home the PIAA 6A State Championship title.
The Colonials beat the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils, a western Pennsylvania team boasting a strong record in state competition, with a score of 60-40 in the championship match up at the Giant Arena in Hershey, Pa. During the first few minutes of the game, the Colonials jumped ahead 5-0, and the Blue Devils rallied to tie the score at 7-7. However, once the Colonials settled into their routine on the court, the team went up 15-7 by the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
Senior point guard Kaitlyn Flanagan, while only scoring two points, kept the team focused on both offense and defense while contributing seven assists, four rebounds and one block. The pair of junior starters connected for more than 40 of the Colonial points, with Abby Sharpe scoring 26 points and Erin Daley 17. Senior Lainey Allen scored eight points and had eight rebounds. Jordyn Thomas had seven points, five assists, and four rebounds.
The Colonials are known for their height and “basketball IQ,” but it’s the teamwork that won the girls an undefeated season — and the hearts of their fans. The PW-Mt. Lebanon game had the highest attendance of this year’s state title games with a sea of red in support of the Colonials.
By taking it “one game at a time,” the team went 34-0 for the season, checking off the Suburban One League Liberty Division, Suburban One League, and PIAA District One titles on their way to taking the state crown. The accomplishment also marks the first state title by a girls’ team at PW.
Congratulations to the State Champion PW Girls Basketball Team on an incredible and historic season!
