Eighth grade students were excited to be back in the science lab at Colonial Middle School, where they used Alka-Seltzer antacid tablets to learn about control groups, experimental groups, and variables.

The scientists worked in teams to develop hypotheses about how stirring, water temperature, or crushing the tablet might affect how it dissolves. Then they designed and ran an experiment to test their hypotheses.

“My favorite part of the experiment was being able to do a hands-on activity with my group members. It’s been a while since we got to do labs like the old way,” said CMS eighth grader Bridget Fullerton. “I look forward to doing more in the future.”
