Members of the Colonial School District School Board toured the construction site for the new Colonial Middle School at the beginning of May, getting a sneak peek at the new building, which is planned to open in spring of 2022.

Representatives from D'Huy Engineering and KCBA Architects led Board members on a walk through the building, stopping at various sections of the new school including the main lobby, the auditorium, science classrooms, and the gym.

Those taking the tour had the chance to see both the framework and the finished project, thanks to QR code technology. In various parts of the building, visitors were able to scan a QR code and then use their phone to pan over the area to see what it will look like once it is finished. The project is about six weeks behind due to delays caused by the pandemic. All work stopped for a period of several weeks in late March 2020, and resumed at a slower pace about a month later due to COVID-19 protocols. In addition, there have been delays in getting materials like steel.

At this time, most of the steel has been erected. Building exterior work has been taking place, with the installation of brick veneer, windows and metal panels in the courtyard area. Work also continues in the three-story classroom wing, with science classrooms being outfitted with lab tables and cabinets and plumbing installed for the labs and locker rooms.

At the April Facilities Management and Transportation Committee meeting, a designer also shared a look at color schemes and furniture for offices, classrooms and other common areas of the building.

Once the new building is constructed, the current middle school will be demolished, making way for construction of new parking lots, athletic fields, a new access road for school buses, and storm water detention basins. The improvements are meant to improve traffic flow around the school, which sits on Belvoir Road.
