Digital Citizenship

Colonial School District strives to teach children the value and importance of acting responsibly online. Digital citizenship is taught at all levels, starting with K-5 students who receive instruction through their library and technology classes. All middle school students are required to take a Computer Science Foundations class, which includes a digital citizenship component. As students move on from middle school, online safety and responsibility lessons continue to be reinforced.

Colonial School District welcomes the assistance and support of parents and guardians in helping students to uphold the safe and responsible behaviors they learn at school. Reinforcing good digital citizenship at home is critical to helping our young people learn how to navigate the online world in a positive way.

Recognizing that it is not always easy for adults to know how to approach this subject, we've compiled a list of resources for you to consult. Please see below for some recommended sites and other information that might be helpful.

Other things you can do to support your child at home include:

  • Randomly checking messages on your child's phone with your child
  • Reviewing lists of followers on social media to ensure students only interact with people they actually know
  • Enabling Parental Supervision on Instagram
  • Limiting participation in group chats to just close friends
  • Use an app listed below to monitor phone usage
