Colonial Elementary School prepares to take learning outside

Fifth grade students at Colonial Elementary School had a chance to test drive the picnic tables in a new area that will be a designated outdoor classroom.

“We eat lunch in the library [due to social distancing], but Mrs. Rock, the best principal ever, let us go outside, because we were behaving really well,” said fifth grader Aseel Elhassan, who enjoyed the trees and flowers but was not a fan of spiders. “It was good. I brought my jacket, but I didn’t need it.”

The area will also include tree stump seating.

“The students loved being out there and will love learning in a different environment,” said Mrs. Rock. “We have beautiful grounds. It’ll be great to be able to use them more.”

The outdoor classroom is the result of a $1,500 gift from Tom and Linda Doll with a matching grant from Subaru of America, Inc. and was funded through the Colonial School District Education Foundation.
