"The road to success starts with a good plan..."
Plymouth Whitemarsh High School offers different types of courses in high school to prepare students for a variety of post-high school opportunities.
Academic level courses are demanding college preparatory courses that require average to above-average analytical reading skills. Students can expect regular homework which reinforces concepts developed in class and some material which is challenging at high cognitive levels.
CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION COURSES
Career Technical Education courses are part of a statewide initiative to ensure that all students have access to courses which reflect the demanding needs of the current workforce. Central Montco Technical High School (CMTHS) prepares students to pursue post-secondary career studies and/or obtain employment in a global economy.
Honors courses are rigorous courses which demand a high level of analytical reading ability and often lead to Advanced Placement studies. Courses eligible for honors designation are marked accordingly in the course catalog and receive weighted grading. Students are required to spend a significant amount of time outside of class on course work and may have summer assignments.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES*
Advanced Placement (AP) courses follow a strict syllabus set by the College Entrance Examination Board and are challenging courses intended for students with a consistent record of outstanding achievement. Students taking AP courses MUST take the corresponding exams in May or forfeit AP designation and weighted grade calculations.
*Honors and AP courses require teacher recommendations. In recommending students for honors and AP courses, teachers consider numerous factors in determining if the course level is in the student’s best interest. In the event that a teacher recommends against the placement, parents should contact the teacher and counselor to discuss the situation. If parents choose to override a faculty recommendation, they must submit a completed Parent Override Form to their child’s counselor. Students submitting override forms will not be permitted to drop the course once it has begun for any reason. This form may be obtained in the School Counseling Center. Parent Override Forms will be honored only if class size permits additional placement of students. No override forms will be honored after the start of the semester.
