The goals of the Colonial School District's Library Media Centers are to teach students to develop fundamental information literacy skills along and encourage the love of reading that is necessary for lifelong learning in the 21st Century. Elementary students have library class weekly as part of the specialist class rotation.
THE LIBRARY CURRICULUM FOCUSES ON THREE MAIN AREAS:
- Literature: Students will listen and respond to a variety of literature, understand and identify characteristics of different genres of literature, as well as develop a knowledge base of a variety of authors and illustrators.
- Information skills: Students will use information and materials responsibly while understanding the essential format of various media, through learning procedures and organizational skills necessary to locate and select valid materials suitable to interests and research.
- Research process: Students will learn to explore a topic through gathering, evaluating, analyzing and synthesizing information from a variety of sources to solve problems, answer questions and gain new understanding to create new knowledge
