Student Spotlight: Ace Cratin

Plymouth Whitemarsh High School senior Ace Cratin had the opportunity to play with student musicians from all over the world as part of his participation in the Philadelphia International Music Festival held at Valley Forge Military Academy this past summer.

Ace was personally invited to participate by Thomas Hong, a world-renowned conductor for the festival who is also the artistic director and conductor for the University of Pennsylvania Orchestras. Mr. Hong reached out after finding Ace on the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Roster.

Ace, who plays bassoon, took part in several days of activities where he had the opportunity to perform challenging musical compositions, such as Berlioz’s “Roman Carnival Overture” and Korsakov’s “Capriccio Espagnol.” His time at the festival concluded with a concert performance alongside other young artists.

“I enjoyed playing with high-level, talented musicians from all over the world (Hong Kong, Trinidad, and many more), as well as playing challenging music, new parts, and experiencing a different style of orchestral rehearsal and playing,” said Ace.
