Making a Difference: PW students present Colonial Neighborhood Council with $2,000 donation

Plymouth Whitemarsh High School students who organized a volleyball tournament fundraiser presented a check for $2,000 to the Colonial Neighborhood Council (CNC), money that will assist the Conshohocken-based food pantry in replenishing shelves when donations run low.

Students Marissa Perez, Abby Boegner, Freddie Zamichieli, and Brennan Coyle took on the organization and publicity for the April 2023 Spike Away Hunger event, which is a 4-on-4 volleyball tournament. The students, who are part of the International Baccalaureate Career Programme (IBCP), took on different roles while planning the event, such as marketing, finance, and event design.

The team also came up with a mission statement for their event, which is “to benefit the community through a fun and entertaining event to help the Colonial Neighborhood Council provide goods for those in need located in our own backyard.”

The event generated $2,000, and Marissa, Abby and Freddie greeted CNC Executive Director Sandy Fryer with the check in December. Ms. Fryer said the donation is appreciated because it will be used to purchase items that may be needed when donations slow down over the summer months.

Freddie said he was glad to have been a part of the effort to raise funds for area families.

“It really showed me how even in our own community, people can always use help,” he said. “It felt great to give back to a community who has given so much to me.”
