While the Eagles and Chiefs were preparing for the big game, students at Colonial Middle School (CMS) were holding a “Souper Bowl” of their own.

The school’s Kindness Club ran a food drive related to the game that brought in hundreds of items. During Activity Period at CMS, members of the club made posters and put together information for the morning announcements to encourage their peers to participate.

Seventh grader Jewels Knecht loved watching the donations come in. “My favorite part of the project was the feeling of getting to help people,” said Jewels. “I loved getting to see how much food was stacked on the counters. It was so surreal.”

The two-year-old club has organized several drives to support the local community, including collecting used clothing and gently used children’s books. The members also spread kind messages through the building and work on individual community service projects.

“I joined the Kindness Club, because I love being kind and thinking of projects to be kind,” said CMS seventh grader Liv spicer.

CMS World Language teacher Sarah Halcovage finds it rewarding to sponsor the club. “It is so inspiring to work alongside kids who are actively involved in thinking about others and brainstorming ways to make their school and community a better place.”

The items collected in the Souper Bowl went to the Colonial Neighborhood Council.
