Making A Difference: Breakfast with the PWHS National Honor Society at Cecil and Grace Bean's Soup Kitchen

While many of their peers were sleeping in on a Saturday morning, a team of volunteers from Plymouth Whitmarsh High School’s National Honor Society were busy with breakfast at Cecil and Grace Bean's Soup Kitchen in Norristown.
The NHS team helped to make and serve more than 130 meals for community members in need. The menu included a cheesy potato casserole, scrambled eggs, sausage, cereal, yogurt, fruit, and assorted drinks.
PWHS junior Max Tobin volunteers for the soup kitchen regularly and led the effort. “I felt that bringing other members of the NHS along was important, because the soup kitchen, in particular, allows people who volunteer to see the immediate impact of their work on people in the community, and how grateful everyone who comes in is to receive a hot meal for free,” he said.
The volunteers also set up tables, and cleaned up when the meal was finished.
While the National Honor Society requires service hours, Max believes that volunteering in the community is rewarding on its own.
“It allows us to give back our time to make the world a better place and improve people's lives,” said Max. “Sometimes that single meal we give to people can completely change their day, and that's what I love about it.”
