Struggling families are benefiting from Food For Thought campaign
Thanks to everyone who donated to Food For Thought: Weekend Edition, Colonial families facing food insecurity are able to feed their children through the weekends.
Since November, the Colonial School District Education Foundation and the District’s Pupil Services department have distributed $3,375 in grocery store gift cards.
“Every school year we have many families who report that they are experiencing food instability,” said the Colonial School District Home and School Visitor, Meghann Radick. “Historically, we refer these families to local food pantries, particularly the Colonial Neighborhood Council. While Colonial School District is so very lucky to have the CNC and other resources to refer families to, there are often limits on the types of food they can get from these places. The Food For Thought: Weekend Edition program allows families to purchase fresh produce and meats.”
The families consistently share their gratitude.
One parent said that being a recipient of the weekend meal program “has provided so much relief” to their family. Another parent noted that they were trying to decide if they should spend their remaining monthly money on needed clothing for their child or food. The program allowed them to purchase clothing and still be able to provide meals.
The Colonial School District Education Foundation's 2023 annual campaign Food For Thought: Weekend Edition brought in more than $10,000 for the cause and is the partner program to the 2022 campaign that, along with a large donation from John Kennedy Subaru and Subaru of America, continues to pay for lunches for Colonial School District families who just miss the cutoff for free lunch.
