Students string together spirit for Philly teams at Colonial Middle School

Is the second time a charm? Colonial Middle School students in Melanie Sherer’s class are hoping that their crafting skills will once again lead to more wins and another championship title for Philadelphia this fall.

Students in Ms. Sherer’s special education classroom were hard at work as Red October began, stringing together red, white, and blue beads for Phillies-themed bracelets to sell to their teachers and fellow students. The hope was that their efforts will continue the lucky streak that started when they decorated and sold Eagles-themed pens last year leading up to the Super Bowl.

The Eagles haven’t lost since they made their pens, Ms. Sherer noted with pride. So she and her students are doing their part to keep the good mojo going this year for the Phils. Fortunately she already had an existing supply of red, white, and blue beads, since they are the same colors of the CMS Patriots.

While the activity is a fun creative outlet for students, it is also helping them to enhance their fine motor skills, practice making patterns, learn the proper spelling of Phillies players’ names and other words, and calculate sales totals and change for those who purchase the bracelets.

The proceeds from the sale of the bracelets provides the class with funds to do other activities the rest of the year. In just three days of sales, the students had raised over $300.

In addition to acquiring valuable skills and raising funds, the students have found that their creative endeavors have led to positive buzz around Colonial Middle School and a feeling of unity as everyone joins together to cheer on Philadelphia sports teams.
