Stepping up for Unity: Elementary students showcase skills in Unity Day celebration

Leading up to the school’s Unity Day celebration, Conshohocken Elementary students worked on their stepping skills with weekly visits from the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Step Team.

The students created routines where they introduced themselves and shared thoughts about unity—while incorporating rhythmic beats they made through movement, stomping, and clapping.

Second grader Caleb Wiley enjoyed the opportunity to step with his friends and served as a leader for several of the routines. “I did stepping last year,” he said. It’s really fun to do it again.”

Prior to their performance, the Conshohocken Elementary steppers and the PWHS Step Team led the school’s Unity Walk up Fourth Street to The Fellowship House and back to the school. Then the students hit the stage in the Conshohocken Elementary gym to do their routines for the rest of the school, as well as for family members who came to the school for the Unity Walk.

“I’ve been practicing a lot of stuff, and I was excited for today,” said second grader Surah Richard. She felt a little nervous at first because of the large crowd but believed the group’s preparation paid off with a good performance.

PWHS student Brianna Price had fun working with the elementary students. “They show a lot of respect and show that they care about unity and what’s happening around them,” she said.

The PWHS Step Team also worked with the Colonial Middle School Step Team during February. The Step Team is an outreach program of the school’s Black Cultural Awareness Club.
