PWHS Boys Doubles Tennis team repeats as league champions
Plymouth Whitemarsh High School sophomore Jinay Sheth and senior James Fassbender repeated as the Suburban One League Liberty Conference Boys Doubles Tennis champions.
Jinay and James entered the tournament as the number one seed, which gave them a first round bye. The pair beat Wissahickon in the second round, the Abington team of Ginzberg and Eichenbaum in the third round, and Upper Dublin’s Hong and Eguchi in the final round: 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
“Seeing Jinay and James play together is great, because they are higher level players that thrive on competition,” said Boys Tennis Coach Beth Rickard. “Both are pretty stoic while playing, but they are passionate about their sport and have great competitive spirits.”
At the PIAA District 1 doubles tournament, the pair lost in the third round against Rao and Luiniecki from Conestoga and succumbed to Carroll and Tierney of Unionville in a nearly three-hour playback match for states.
At the District 1 singles tournament. Jinay, who was also the Suburban One League Liberty Conference singles champion, and James both lost their matches in the second round. It was James’s fourth appearance at Districts and Jinay’s second.
Next year, James plans to continue his tennis career with the Division III Bears at Ursinus College.
