Plymouth Whitemarsh High School students take on flowery assignment
Plymouth Whitemarsh High School students became florists for a day as part of an activity during their Life Skills class with Mary Rems.
Students were provided with a variety of flowers and vases and were taught about how to use different types of blooms to create visual appeal and contrast. Mrs. Sabin, an instructional aide in the class who has 15 years of experience as a florist, shared her knowledge with the students and helped them to create their arrangements.
“I liked designing the flowers,” said Isaiah Pigford Hicks. “I learned how to be precise in cutting my flowers to different lengths.”
In addition to making the arrangements, students wrote notes to their mothers to go along with the flowers so they could be used as gifts for Mother’s Day. Knowing that her mother would receive her arrangement helped Sophia Van Coillie to determine which flowers to use.
“I knew which flowers my mom likes,” she said, adding that arranging the flowers helped her to feel calm.
Olivia Chew, whose favorite part of the activity was being able to work with Mrs. Sabin, said she chose flowers for her arrangement by color. Students were able to choose from greenery as well as flowers like carnations and roses.
