The students and staff at Plymouth Elementary School got comfortable in their pajamas for the last day of school before winter break—while raising money for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

“Usually, you don’t get to wear pajamas at school, so it’s a fun opportunity,” said PE third grader Patrick Clements.

The school set a goal of raising $1,500 and ended up bringing in $1,845 for CHOP. However, that wasn’t the only service project for December. The Spirit Team is running a collection of warm winter items for Cradles to Crayons through January 18, and  PE third grader Delaney Sturm, one of the school’s Spirit Team members, spent the month collecting pajamas for patients with Sickle Cell Disease at Nemours Children's Health.

The projects teach the students that it’s important to help people in need—and give them an opportunity to feel what it's like to give back to their community.

”It makes me happy, because I like to see other people smile and be filled with joy,” said PE third grader Lena Ward.

Since its start as the nation’s first hospital devoted to children in 1855, CHOP has made numerous medical discoveries and innovations that have improved pediatric healthcare and saved countless children’s lives.

The money raised during Pajama Day goes to help CHOP continue to “make today’s innovative ideas tomorrow’s realities.”
