Making a Difference: CMS Student Council raises $900 for school supplies through Cornhole Tournament

Colonial Middle School’s Student Council raised approximately $900 to buy school supplies for children in need through its first 6th Grade Superhero Cornhole Tournament held on May 28.

The tournament was open to sixth-graders and Student Council members, who paid $10 per player to sign up. They were invited to dress up as superheroes and compete for bragging rights during the tournament held in the gym. Twenty-six teams entered the tournament, which was run as a double elimination competition on 10 cornhole boards. 

Team Air Mail, made up of Ryan Brown and Ben Curci, won the tournament, followed by The Great Cornholios, made up of Dean Humphries, Max The, Finn Fungston, and Marc Orchowski. The Diamond Divas were deemed the best-dressed. The Divas included Scarlett Venezia, Liv Smith, Emilia Civeralla, and Shea Francis. 

During the event, Student Council members kept score, worked the score board, and operated the snack stand. They also helped prepare for the tournament by building two of the cornhole boards, which will be donated to the school for future use and in honor of Colonial Middle School employees Mary Jo Katona, an instructional aide who passed away in May, and Maryanne Acquaviva, an administrative assistant who is retiring at the end of this year.

Student Council advisor Bill Ryan said that while he came up with the idea for a cornhole competition, it was inspired by the students’ desire to hold an event that would be fun and inclusive for all students, regardless of skill level. All of the funds raised will be used to shop for school supplies and backpacks that will be put together before the start of the new school year in August.
