Conshohocken's garden yields big harvest, thanks to student volunteers

The heat of the summer months can often wreak havoc on a garden, but Conshohocken Elementary School students and their families made sure the veggies and flowers in their school plot survived the weather extremes throughout July and August.

The volunteers braved hot weather to water and weed the garden, which has been tended for 13 years by Conshohocken Elementary School students and their families. Those who sign on to help out for a week during the summer can keep some of what’s grown for themselves, or donate it to the Colonial Neighborhood Council. This summer’s harvest included zinnias, zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes.

The harvest will wrap up this fall, with third-graders assisting in collecting what remains and then preparing the plots for the winter. Conshohocken partners with the Environmental Advisory Council and the Community Garden Board to teach students about planting, composting, and native species each year.
