Thanksgiving may be just around the corner, but the spirit of the holiday arrived early for senior citizen neighbors visiting Conshohocken Elementary School. Third graders donned aprons and chef hats and served their guests a full turkey feast with all the fixings, prepared by Colonial School District’s Food & Nutrition Services.

“My favorite thing was that we get to serve people that we don’t know to make them happier,” said Conshohocken Elementary third grader Micah Morris.

After buzzing around the room taking and delivering orders, the children took the stage for a short concert. The senior citizens enjoyed the activity and excitement in addition to the dinner.

“The food was delicious, the kids were delightful, and their manners are wonderful,” said guest Sharon Santello. “The school did a great job with everything.”

Preparation for the day started last week for the students at Conshohocken Elementary. Members of the Helping Hands club came to school an hour early to make paper bag turkeys “stuffed” with candy as a gift for each visitor. Half of the students made packets with the candy and a note, while the other half glued googly eyes and a beak on the bag.

Conshohocken Elementary student Kyrie Dunmore was sure about his favorite part. “The eyes,” he said.

The third graders in the Helping Hands Club meet once each month to do a community service project and learn the importance of giving back to others.

“It’s important, because it makes people feel loved and it makes people feel thought about,” said Conshohocken Elementary student Riley MacNeal. “It can make a big difference in the world.”

Through their efforts, Conshohocken Elementary students not only brought joy to their guests but also learned valuable lessons about the rewards of giving to others.
