Conshohocken Elementary celebrates meeting summer reading goal
The students at Conshohocken Elementary School combined their efforts to read more than 1,000 news articles over the summer, earning them a popsicle party and extra recess time. Last year’s third graders even got to celebrate at their new school, Colonial Elementary School.
During the summer break, the children visited News-O-Matic online and read at least five stories about current events that appealed to them. The students were excited to learn more about what is happening in the world around them.
“The kids love it because of the variety,” said Conshohocken Elementary principal Denise Marks. “If you’re a sports kid or a geography kid or have some other kind of passion, you can find something that interests you.”
After several years of using News-O-Matic successfully at the third grade level, the school expanded the program to all grades for the 2024-2025 school year. News-O-Matic can be customized to each child’s reading level, so the students can all read the same story and be successful. At the end of the article, students answer questions that test their comprehension.
After celebrating with the first and second graders at Conshohocken Elementary School, the third grade teachers traveled to Colonial Elementary School to treat their former third graders for doing their part to meet the school goal.
