Colonial Players take home six awards in major categories at Independence Awards

The Colonial Players of Plymouth Whitemarsh High School had a triumphant night at the 2025 Philadelphia Independence Awards for High School Musical Theater, taking home six awards during a dazzling ceremony held at the historic Miller Theater in Philadelphia. Presented in partnership with Ensemble Arts Philly, the event celebrated the region’s finest high school musical theater programs.

The Colonial Players’ production of "Matilda the Musical" was recognized in multiple major categories:

  • Best Featured Actress – Sophie Cammarota (Lavender)

  • Best Supporting Actor – Max Erdakos-Roizman (Agatha Trunchbull)

  • Best Small Ensemble – The Littles

  • Best Scenic Design

  • Best Stage Management & Shift Crew

  • Best Song – “Revolting Children”

The night was made even more memorable as the cast of "Matilda" wowed the audience with a high-energy performance of the award-winning number “Revolting Children,” receiving roaring applause and showcasing the extraordinary talent and spirit of PWHS students.

In addition, Max Erdakos-Roizman — also nominated for the Jimmy Awards — delivered a standout performance as Miss Trunchbull in the Jimmy Awards medley, performing “Smell of Rebellion” with charisma and power that captivated the packed house.

The evening was filled with incredible performances from across the region, appearances by local theater celebrities, and a contagious sense of excitement and celebration.

“It was a thrill to see our students celebrated for their incredible talent and commitment,” said Mickey Engel, Colonial Players director and nominee for the Theater Educator Award. “From the crew behind the scenes to the performers on stage, every student involved poured their heart into this production — and it showed.”

The ceremony was filled with memorable performances, appearances by local theater professionals, and a shared sense of celebration for the power of arts in education. The Colonial Players proudly represented Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and left an indelible mark on the evening.
