Colonial Middle School students introduced to career paths

Colonial Middle School sixth-graders learned about professions in medicine, engineering, marketing, and education during the school’s Career Day event on May 17.

The day kicked off with keynote speaker Sonia Pinkney, a Colonial School District parent who presented to students and focused on a theme of capitalizing on strengths and managing weaknesses. Following her presentation, the students visited with three presenters to learn more about a particular career. Options included hearing from a Plymouth Township detective, a research scientist, a nurse practitioner, engineers, and many others. Each presenter was either a parent or a community member.

“I liked the session from the police officer; they risk their lives to save lives,” said Vian Singh. “The officer shared how they have body cams on their vest.”

Other students noted that they learned something new about a career (for example, that marketing can be interesting) and that it is not unusual to change careers.

“I like how Career Day was a change of pace from our normal day,” said Katie Burnside.
