Colonial Elementary School students renew pledge to fight bullying and bias

Colonial Elementary School students renewed their pledge to fight bullying and make all feel welcome during the school’s No Place for Hate assembly in November.

During the assembly, students watched a video of their peers talking about the No Place for Hate program and also reviewed data collected through a survey. The survey asked students to answer prompts like “What is the best thing to do if I see someone being hurt or bullied?” Over 96 percent of students answered with “Use my words to stop it and then tell a teacher.”

The assembly featured musical performances by Colonial students, and ADL peer trainers from Plymouth Whitemarsh High School also greeted the students to share information about what they do and engaged students with an inclusion activity. The high school students performed a short skit in which they acted out a scenario where a student was bullied and asked students how they should respond. 

All schools in the Colonial School District are designated as No Place for Hate institutions by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). In order to maintain the designation, schools must take part in three school-wide, discussion-based activities each year that help students to reflect on biased behavior and to learn new ways to challenge bias and bullying.
