Bus drivers throughout the school district recently made an additional stop by Colonial Elementary School to celebrate National School Bus Safety Week.
National School Bus Safety Week began in 1969 through President Richard Nixon. The purpose of the week is to highlight the importance of being safe while around and on school buses. Common safety measures that students are instructed to follow include staying seated on the buses and staying 10 feet away from your bus as it approaches the stop.
However, the week is about more than just learning how to be safe on the bus. It’s also about appreciating the bus drivers that help students out every day.
When asked why he is so proud of the bus drivers at Colonial School District, Director of Transportation Christopher Brown said, “them coming, showing up every day, being the first adult contact the student has, both morning and afternoon.” He continued by adding, “they’re what keeps this district going.”
