CMS students use science to create bath bombs

Sixth graders at Colonial Middle School recently combined chemistry and creativity to make bath bombs. These fizzy creations, known for their relaxing properties, include ingredients like Epsom salt to soothe tired muscles and essential oils for a calming fragrance.

The students learned that the fizzing effect is the result of a chemical reaction between citric acid and baking soda (an acid and a base). When water is added, it dissolves these ingredients and triggers the reaction, releasing carbon dioxide gas, which creates the familiar fizz. That meant that the students had to be careful when combining everything together so the reaction didn’t start prematurely.

“You need to add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients slowly to make it consistent,” explained Luke Dinan, a sixth grader at the school. “If you add the wet mixture too quickly, it fizzes up and bubbles.”

The students then packed the final mixture into silicone molds. After 24 hours, they were able to take their finished bath bombs home for winter break.

Make Your Own Bath Bomb

Interested in making your own bath bombs at home? Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a bowl, combine the following dry ingredients:

  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of citric acid
  • 1/2 cup of cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup of Epsom salt

Step 2: Prepare the Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix together:

  • 2 teaspoons of coconut oil or olive oil
  • 1–2 teaspoons of water
  • A few drops of essential oil (optional)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Step 3: Combine the Wet and Dry Mixtures

Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture, stirring constantly. If the mixture begins to fizz, stop and stir more gently.

Step 4: Mold the Mixture

Once the mixture feels like damp sand and holds its shape when squeezed, pack it tightly into a mold. Allow the bath bombs to set for at least 24 hours before removing them from the molds.

Now you're ready to enjoy your very own homemade bath bombs!
