Annual Dragon Parade marks Lunar New Year at Ridge Park
Colorful dragons, musical instruments, and shouts of the Cantonese wish for prosperity, “Kung Hei Fat Choi,” filled the halls of Ridge Park Elementary School, as the first graders performed their annual Dragon Parade in celebration of the Lunar New Year.
“I was one of the dragon holders,” said RP first grader Sara Krentzman. “We walked in a circle to show the other kids our dragon and wish them a happy new year.”
During the week leading up to the event, the children read stories, watched videos, and discussed the traditions surrounding the celebration.
For Ellie Shou, a first grader in Anne Leaness’ class, it was a chance to share how her family celebrates the day—like how they eat fish for good luck and long noodles for a long life. She also brought in gifts for all of her classmates: festive envelopes featuring a dragon design and money for luck.
“You give them out for the Chinese New Year,” said Ellie. “You’re supposed to give it to people to show happiness, and I know that because my Dad celebrates it and his Mom celebrates it, too.”
The classroom conversations leading up to the Dragon Parade are Mrs. Leaness’ favorite thing about the celebration.
“I think it opens the class’ eyes to a culture that may not be their own,” she said. “And if it is their own culture, it highlights their special traditions, and they feel seen and like they belong in our classroom community.”
The Dragon Parade has been a tradition for first graders at Ridge Park Elementary school for more than 30 years.
