Rhianna Gooneratne claims second Suburban One League Championship
For the second year in a row, Rhianna Gooneratne has claimed the Suburban One League championship in girls golf and is headed to the District One golf tournament at Raven’s Claw and Turtle Creek Oct. 14-15.
Rhianna is the first student in recent history to win back-to-back championships, according to Coach Jeff Kavanaugh. Rhianna won the SOL tournament held in Warminster the first week of October by three shots, ending with a score of 70, which is one under par. “She played some very smart golf, switching to her 3 wood off of the tee and getting back-to-back birdies after the switch,” said Mr. Kavanaugh.
Rhianna, a senior, finished third in the District One tournament last year and is the defending state champion for PIAA AAA girls golf. She is the first girl and second golfer in school history to win a state title.
On the boys’ side, Sean Herron qualified for the District One tournament as well. He finished in the top 40 with a score of 84 and will be competing Oct. 14-15 along with Rhianna.
