Jia Montanez, a third grader at Conshohocken Elementary School (CE), has been wresting for the Greater Norristown Wrestling Club's Titans for two years and recently took first place in her wrestling tournament.
What Jia loves most about wrestling is trying different moves, continuing to improve, learning from her mistakes and cheering for her teammates. Jia is most proud of taking third place at the state competition at Mohegan Sun Arena her first year on the Titans squad. She wrestled six very tough matches that weekend against wrestlers with much more experience than her.
When asked how she became interested in wrestling, Jia shared that her father would wrestle with her in the basement, and he said, "I was a natural." Her older brother, Juan, goes to Colonial Middle School and also wrestles for the Titans.
At school, Jia always strives to do her best with her school work and to be a model citizen at CE.
"It's important to tell others when they have done a good job and to be a good sport. It's all about what's on the inside; girls can do all the sports that boys can do, and boys can do all the sports that girls can do," said Jia. "It's also important to stay confident in school and learn from my mistakes so I can do better next time."
Jia hopes to earn a college scholarship for academics and wrestling.
