For the past two years, Colonial Elementary School (CES) fifth grader Audrianna Bickings has collected greeting cards for soldiers overseas who can't be with their families during the winter holidays. Her uncle James Katona inspired her to start the project.
"My uncle was in the military and wasn't with his family for Christmas a couple years ago," said Audrianna. "I think it's really sad. I thought it would be nice to put some cards together for them."
This year, she collected more than 275 cards — many created by the other students at CES — and sent them to a family friend in the military to distribute to the soldiers there.
"And of course we added candy to it, because who doesn't like candy?" said Audrianna.
Audrianna plans to continue the project as she heads to Colonial Middle School next year.
