Members of the Simon's Heart Club, new this year at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS), presented a travel automated external defibrillator (AED) to Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Ralph Bretz on June 5. The presentation was made to coincide with the American Heart Association's CPR/AED Awareness Week, June 1-7.
Members of the club conducted various fundraising activities in order to purchase the device.
"We sold bracelets and candy during February, Heart Awareness Month," said junior Jordyn Goldring, one of the club's organizers. "We also received donations from faculty and community members."
PWHS's Simon's Heart Club is affiliated with a Lafayette Hill-based nonprofit organization also called Simon's Heart (formerly Simon's Fund). In addition to distributing AEDs where kids learn and play, Simon's Heart offers free heart screenings for children and raises awareness about conditions that lead to sudden cardiac arrest in children and infants.
