October Board Meeting Recap - 2019-2020 school year to start after Labor Day

Group photo of students with certificatesThe 2019-2020 school year will begin after Labor Day in the Colonial School District. At their monthly business meeting on October 22, the Colonial Board of School Directors voted to establish Tuesday, September 3, 2019 as the first day of the school year. The Board generally sets the first day of the year early so that parents may plan summer vacations. In the coming months, the Board will consider the entire school year calendar as developed by the administration.

In other action, the Board approved five policies on a second-read basis, including an updated Bullying-Cyberbullying policy. The policy updates language and adds the cyberbullying component. The Board approved eight policies on a first-read basis. Notable among them is Policy 103 – Nondiscrimination in School and Classroom Practices. The basis of the policy is to maintain a safe and positive learning environment for all students. The remainder of the first-read policies included four updates and three new policies related to curriculum.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Board recognizes members of the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS) Class of 2019 who were named Advanced Placement Scholars and or National Merit Scholars.

Prior to the meeting, Board members, administrators, coaches and students took part in a brief ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS) gymnasium. The new gymnasium is open. The PWHS girls' volleyball team will host a District 1 playoff game on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
