Message from the Superintendent: 7/18/20

Good afternoon, Colonial families:

I hope your summer break is going well and you are safe and healthy. I want to thank the hundreds of parents and teachers who participated in our Back-to-School focus groups earlier this summer. We have been creating varied options for the fall while also monitoring the reopening guidance from local and state medical officials.

Our goals remain steadfast. We want to keep our children and staff safe while providing quality educational opportunities. Additionally, we want our Colonial teachers teaching and connecting with our children.

Yesterday afternoon, the Pennsylvania Department of Health released new guidance for reopening schools. Click here to view the guidance. The new guidelines stress the importance of maintaining six (6) feet of social distancing "to the maximum extent possible." Some local departments of health in Southeast Pennsylvania have previously stated that a three to six foot range could be acceptable.

Next week, the board will have two public meetings. These virtual meetings will be held on July 21 and July 23 at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, 7/21, the Board will be presented with our recommended reopening plan. The Board is not voting on the plan Tuesday evening. There will be time allocated at the end of the meeting for public comment and questions. Thursday, 7/23, is the Board's regular monthly business meeting and the reopening plans will be on that agenda again. Public comment will be heard at the beginning and conclusion of the meeting on 7/23. We will post information for making comments at the Board meeting on our website prior each meeting.

Given the continually changing challenges of COVD-19 and recent spike in infections across the country, the reopening of school understandably has us all concerned. We have considered multiple options and will discuss what has been considered. Please note that under any reopening plan there will be a fully remote option for families taught by our teachers. We want to return to normalcy, and we want our children to experience academic, social and emotional growth with their peers. While our choices are tough, our recommendations will prioritize the safety and welfare of our students.

Please stay safe,

Mike Christian
