Prior to the Monday, October 22 School Board meeting, Board members, administration, coaches and students took part in a brief ribbon cutting ceremony for the impressive new gymnasium at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS). The PWHS girls’ volleyball team will host a District 1 playoff game in the new gym on Thursday, October 25 at 7 p.m.
The 39,000 square foot facility features climate controls, new locker rooms, an atrium lobby and seating for 1,750 for assemblies and potential indoor graduations. Seating for basketball games will be 1,300, or 400 more than the current capacity of the Colonial Elementary School (CES) gymnasium, which has been the home of PWHS basketball since the 1960s.
The new gym has space for three basketball courts. There are two physical education teaching stations and an auxiliary space, which will be used for adaptive physical education, and practice space for cheerleaders, the drumline, color guard and sports teams.
Across the lobby from the gym is a new training room and a first-class fitness area complete with a separate cardio room.
