Use knowledge of structural features of spoken and written language and use word analysis and context clues to decode and understand words.
This includes high frequency sight words, spelling patterns, letter/sound correspondence and word structures (root words, prefixes, suffixes and syllables) to decode unknown words including multi-syllable words.
Use a multisensory and systematic approach to phonics, spelling, and handwriting. Students develop skills in a cumulative manner from letter formation and phonemic awareness to irregular word instruction, and vocabulary.
Use the writing process to draw and/or write narrative, informational, opinion and poetry pieces.
Use correct structure that matches the type of writing.
Demonstrate grade level conventions and grammar (uses correct capitalization and end punctuation; use commas in dates and words in series; spell words with common spelling patterns; use appropriate verb tense).
