Academics

Hands-on science lesson at Colonial Elementary SchoolThe academics at Colonial Elementary school reinforce and build on the concepts introduced in the kindergarten-to-third-grade curriculum with a strong focus on reading, writing and math. The students also benefit from weekly instruction in the specialist areas of art, health and physical education, library, music and technology – as well as special units of study taught by a full-time science teacher and a full-time guidance counselor

In fourth grade, students continue to have one main teacher throughout the day. In fifth grade, the children benefit from an innovative team approach where two teachers share responsibility for the regular education component.

All teachers in the Colonial School District use “Differentiated Instruction”, where they plan lessons so the students are exposed to the material in a variety of ways in order to accommodate for different learning styles. The student-centered classroom gives children ownership of their learning and allows them to explore content in large groups, small groups and independently. This approach helps children develop a foundation in 21st century skills, such as learning how to communicate and collaborate effectively with their peers, as well as provides students with the strategies and confidence to discover new things on their own.
