ART CLUB

Description: Art Club inspires students to explore and cultivate their artistic talents in the fine arts. Projects are designed to develop drawing, painting and sculpting skills through traditional art forms and interactive learning with iPad apps. Student artwork will be showcased in The CSD and CMS Art Shows. Students will also work with Plymouth Whitemarsh's National Art Honor Society on a community service project.
Eligibility Requirements: All middle school students are welcome to join. Work must be completed in order to attend the annual Grounds for Sculpture Field Trip. Students are encouraged to attend the CSD and CMS Art Shows.
Time Commitment: One day a week or two if you would like. Art club is held during activity periods. Additional opportunities to work after school are available.

CONCERT CHORUS (7TH & 8TH GRADES)

Description: The CMS Concert Chorus is a singing group consisting of 7th and 8th Grade students at the Colonial Middle School. The group rehearses during the activity period of the school day. The chorus performs various assembly programs for both CES and CMS and performs two evening concerts a year, including a winter/seasonal concert and a spring vocal concert. These performances are in conjunction with the CMS Concert Band, Orchestra and 6th Grade Chorus groups.
Eligibility Requirements: Any student enrolled at CMS may join.
Time Commitment: Activity period of the school day and two evening concerts per year.

CONCERT BAND

Description: The CMS Concert Band is open to all students at CMS who play a band instrument (trumpet, flute, saxophone, etc). Participation in Concert Band is part of the Instrumental Music grade along with group lessons. The Concert Band rehearses once a week and has two public concerts each year.
Eligibility Requirements: There is no audition or experience necessary to join the Concert Band. Students must provide their own instruments. A limited number of school instruments are available for those who are unable to rent their own.
Time Commitment: One rehearsal and one group lesson each week along with daily practice at home.

INDOOR GUARD

Description: Indoor Guard is a winter and spring colorguard activity that combines music, movement, dance, drill, drama, costumes and props to give a theatrical spin to this performance art. The CMS Indoor Guard competes in a local indoor colorguard circuit and performs at approximately four-to-five competitions a season. They have won the Philadelphia-area Best Middle School Colorguard Gold Medal in 2010 and 2013. This team also performs at half-time during the annual Patriot Classic Basketball Tournament.
Eligibility Requirements: Any student in any grade may participate in Indoor Guard as long as they can make the time commitment and maintain good grades.
Time Commitment: Tuesday and Thursday rehearsals after school and some Saturday rehearsals. All competitions also take place on Saturdays. Season runs December through April.
Procedure for Joining: Attend annual interest meeting in November and then attend all rehearsals.

JAZZ BAND

Description: The CMS Jazz Band is an auditioned group for students in 6th-8th grade who play a jazz band instrument. The jazz band plays various styles of big band jazz and participates in school concerts and adjudication festivals throughout the year. Students are selected through an audition process and rehearse once a week after school beginning in late October/November.
Eligibility Requirements: Students must audition and demonstrate advanced proficiency on their instrument.
Time Commitment: Home practice of 30 minutes a day, after school rehearsals and evening festivals are all part of the jazz band experience.
Procedure for Joining: Auditions are held at the beginning of November. Audition material is posted one to two weeks before the auditions start.

MUSIC THEATER PRODUCTION

Description: The CMS Music Theater Production is an after-school theater program which develops acting, singing and dancing skills in young performers at CMS. The result of many rehearsals is a production that is displayed/performed for the greater community with typically three performance dates currently in March.
Eligibility Requirements: Students are required to audition/interview to be added to the cast, crew or technical crew lists.
Time Commitment: Three days a week after school and Saturday Morning rehearsals

ORCHESTRA

Description: The CMS Orchestra is open to all students at CMS who play a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass). Participation in Orchestra is part of the Instrumental Music grade along with group lessons. The Orchestra rehearses once a week and has two public concerts each year.
Eligibility Requirements: There is no audition or experience necessary to join the Orchestra. Students must provide their own instruments. A limited number of school instruments are available for those who are unable to rent their own.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

Description: An extension of art club created to give creative and artistic students an opportunity to make art using digital photography as well as conventional art materials. Students explore proper/artistic photographic techniques as well as basic photo editing with Adobe Photoshop and iPad apps. (The Photo and Art clubs take a field trip to the Grounds for Sculpture in the spring, and all are welcome, as long as projects throughout the year have been completed.)
Eligibility Requirements: All students are welcome to join the photo club but they should be able to work independently with the guidance of their teacher and fellow artists. Responsibility for school cameras and a commitment to help maintain the memory cards and equipment is necessary. Students do not need to have their own camera but a flash drive with at least 4 GB is recommended.
Time Commitment: Activity period, at least one day a week, and extra time to take photos/work on projects and help maintain the photo equipment outside of the activity period would be necessary. Students are encouraged to participate in and attend the CSD and CMS art shows in the spring as well.

SELECT CHORUS (7TH & 8TH GRADES)

Description: The CMS Select Chorus is an auditioned choir consisting of 7th and 8th grade students from the Colonial Middle School. In addition to the two main school evening concerts (winter and spring), the CMS Select Chorus performs at various venues in the greater community (i.e. nursing homes) and participates in an annual spring music competition/festival.
Eligibility Requirements: Students need to audition to be added to the group.
Time Commitment: One day a week after school.

6TH GRADE CHORUS

Description: The 6th Grade Chorus is designed to focus on 6th Grade students with musical interest in singing. The 6th Grade Chorus members participate in an advanced music class with Mrs. Oh for one marking period in replacement of the General Music class. Every student who wishes to be in the 6th Grade Chorus will be assessed for placement into the sopranos group or the altos group at the end of the 5th Grade. The group rehearses during the activity period of the school day. The chorus group performs various assembly programs for both CES and CMS and performs two evening concerts a year: a winter/seasonal concert and a spring vocal concert. These performances are in conjunction with the other band, orchestra and chorus groups.
Eligibility Requirements: Any sixth grade student enrolled at CMS may join.
Time Commitment: Activity period of the school day and two evening concerts per year.

WIND ENSEMBLE

Description: The CMS Wind Ensemble is an auditioned group that is made up of students who play a band instrument and participate in the CMS Concert band. The Wind Ensemble performs at school concerts as well as an adjudication festival each year.
Eligibility Requirements: Students must be able to play the 6th Grade Final Exam for their instrument in order to participate.
Time Commitment: Home practice at least 20 minutes a day and full ensemble rehearsals once a week after school.
Procedure for Joining: Practice the 6th grade final exam, then see Mr. O’Neill for an audition.
